Workout Wednesday: Rō Fitness

Looking for a new workout routine in the new year but not sure where to start? Every Wednesday in January we’re trying out a new local workout, and reporting back. (Sorry, but first day jitters are no longer an acceptable excuse.)

This week, TRIBEZA writer James Ruiz checks out Rō Fitness:

A 60-minute, interval-based indoor rowing workout that’s low impact and high energy.

74 Trinity St.

Before my class, I had never used an erg (that’s an indoor rowing machine, for my fellow newbies). But our instructor Chelsea, who co-founded Rō Fitness, gave me a crash course on the machines before we started. My initial nerves were calmed learning that Rō welcomes a diverse clientele, attracting students across all ages, physical abilities and levels of experience. Once we strapped our feet into the ergs, our instructor gave us a quick breakdown of the workout. What followed was a heart-pumping series of 10 two-minute rowing intervals. Between the up-tempo music and Chelsea’s encouragement (remember to push with your legs, not with your back), I was delighted to make it to the end without injury or embarrassment.

I typically exercise in the evenings, but my reward for showing up at daybreak came at the end of our intense workout: a few leg stretches on the deck overlooking a gently steaming Lady Bird Lake. Best cool down ever!

Austin residents get their first Rō class free –– just sign up online. Street parking is available on Rainey Street and at the Mexican American Cultural Center (600 River St.). Also, be sure to check out their new studio in Tarrytown when it opens next month.

Hundreds of people are moving to Austin each day, and downtown is one of the major hubs of growth for the city. Local real estate expert Jude Galligan discusses smart urban growth and what to expect this year as the skyline continues to evolve.

Your blog keeps Austin updated on the latest news in downtown. What is the most exciting development happening right now?

From my point of view, the most exciting development is the Waller Creek District Master Plan. Decades in the making, this transformative project came to life after designers competed for the contract. It is finally coming to downtown, bringing an imaginative chain of parks,...
