The Best Local Beer Pairings for Austin Barbecue

During a lunch break on our I Love You So Much shoot, our staff, photographer and models sat down to share several pounds of brisket, sausage and ribs from la Barbecue (right after shooting this mouthwatering closeup of the spread).

With so many incredible pitmasters and local breweries in town, we reached out to the folks at Austin Beerworks, Adelbert's Brewery, Live Oak Brewing Company and Zilker Brewing Company for some barbecue pairing suggestions.

With Pulled Pork

Austin Beerworks: Fire Eagle

"I love IPA's and pork...Fire Eagle's bitterness holds up to the richness of the pork, and it's balanced enough that it can compliment a range of barbecue sauces." -Nick Pugliese, ABW Account Manager

With Sausage

Adelbert's Brewery: Scratchin' Hippo

“The notes of caramel and roasted malt in Scratchin' Hippo, our Biere de Garde, will bring out the rich savory flavors from the meat, especially one with a little char on the outside. In addition, the subtle cocoa notes in the beer goes really well with a rich and tangy barbecue sauce.” -Sarah Haney, General Manager

With Smoked Brisket

Live Oak Brewing Company: Big Bark Amber

“For the traditional preparation of smoked brisket with onions, pickles and plain white bread, a classic Vienna Lager would be the choice style for such a dish. Our Big Bark amber lager effortlessly complements the simple but assertive flavors and aromas that you encounter in this dish." -Colin Ferguson

With Smoked Turkey

Zilker Brewing Company: Marco IPA

"Smoked turkey is always a good option when seeking the lighter side of the barbecue spectrum. Pair your smoked turkey with the Marco IPA; the Marco’s El Dorado and Simcoe hops create a robust and complex taste that finishes clean. Plus, the burnt orange color of the Marco makes it perfect for Longhorn game days – we’re dying to try it with a giant turkey leg from the Texas State Fair!" -Forrest Clark, Co-Founder
