Summer Fun (and Full on Sun) on the Horizon

With rising temperatures right around the corner, we’ve naturally got a few things on the brain: strappy dresses, swimsuits, and warm sunshine on our shoulders. Barton Springs, Zilker Park, and Hamilton Pool (to name a few) are calling our name, and we’re ready to get out and savor the season!

As much as we love the opportunity to get outdoors, we all know by now that we need to be smart and use precautions against harmful rays to keep our skin looking sun-kissed--not sun-damaged. So we asked Dr. Lawrence Broder, the dermatologist at Beleza Med Spa (1609 S 1st St, for the best strategies for summer-ready skin.

Let’s start with the basics, what is the best way to repair dehydrated, winter skin?

“Exfoliation offers a great way to get your skin ready for summer. Dermatologists recommend using either a chemical or regular exfoliation to help get rid of dry, flaky skin. Be sure to use gentle, circular motions when you apply the cleanser, as rough motions may damage your skin. When it comes to exfoliating, you don’t want to go overboard, and sometimes less is better.

So we’ve exfoliated, what’s next?

Moisturizing your skin is the next step in preparing it for summer. Use a liquid moisturizer if your skin is only a little dry, or a cream moisturizer if your skin is very dry. Be sure to use moisturizers after you exfoliate, shave, and shower.

What’s your take on self-tanners?

Experts say moisturizing after you shave helps close up your pores until your body does the rest of the work. Keep in mind that when you use moisturizers and tanners, the color itself won’t protect your skin from the sun, and you may need to use sunscreen as well.”
