A Look Back on 2014

We asked some of our favorite Austinites to share their favorite memory from 2014.

Ashley Garmon, Photographer

"Shooting the aerials for the Fun Fun Fun Fest was definitely a highlight of my 2014 in Austin! I especially love this shot of Girl Talk and the crowd at his show. It's like you can actually feel the energy and excitement in this particular photograph."

Melba Whatley, Waller Creek Conservancy

"My favorite 2014 Austin moment happened on November 13th. As it became completely dark and freezing cold, the Waller Creek Conservancy unveiled it very first Creek Show: Light Night. Five brilliant teams of designers lit the creek in five stunning, inventive and varied installations. Our fragile and neglected creek instantly became clean, safe, crowded and beautiful between 5th and 8th Streets. Light Night not only highlighted our great local talent but also the transformation of the creek that is coming. Fifteen hundred people and I found it unforgettable."

Andy Langer, Journalist

"In June, the folks at KLRU and Austin City Limits asked me to MC for the live audience the show's 40th Anniversary special at ACL Live. I was honored to play a small part of bona fide Austin music history and terrified when I found out there would be as much as 9 minutes for me to fill between each act. My first time up, I all but begged for mercy - admitting I didn't know how we'd fill the time together. But for four hours, nobody threw anything at me. Nobody booed. They were the most gracious/forgiving audience I've ever stood before. In retrospect, it probably didn't hurt that whenever I got out of the way, somebody like Gary Clark Jr., Bonnie Raitt or Kris Kristofferson came up behind me."

James Taylor, Holy Mountain

"This year was all about Holy Mountain hitting it's stride. We celebrated being open two years this Fall with Mike and the Moonpies and Not in the Face, and hosted some of our best shows since opening, including Ryan Bingham, DJ Q Bert, Cults, The Preatures, Shakey Graves, Slow Magic, Heiroglyphics and countless local bands."

Will Meredith, MFI Austin

"My best truly Austin moment of 2014 was the opening of our "Center for Creative Action" during the East Austin Studio Tour this fall. Creative Action reaches over 20,000 Austin area youth a year through in-school and after school social arts education programs and now they finally have a true headquarters in East Austin. Karen LaShelle and her team are equipping Austin's next generation of citizens and leaders with the tools and skills to build their families, schools and communities stronger every day; and I know our city will be well-served to have this center for years to come."

Deana Saukam, Qui

"My best Austin moment of 2014 would have to be our one-year anniversary party at qui, in June. It was so amazing to celebrate one year of the restaurant with our team and lots of friends, family, and guests! The support has been incredible and this is definitely one of my favorite memories from 2014."

Anne Campbell, Austin Tidbits

"My first-ever class at Wanderlust Yoga. Instructor Kate Waitzkin's Vinyasa Flow class on Tuesday and Thursday mornings has changed my life! I love staying after class and working from the adjoining cafe, Blenders and Bowls. Their Green Bowl plus my laptop after a good yoga class equals my happy place!"

Claire Zinnecker, Interior Designer

"Anytime the greenbelt is full of water! With all the rain we have had, it has been full almost all year, making for the perfect running/swimming/thinking spot."

Dr. John Hogg

"The top three 2014 Austin Moments for me were being backstage during SXSW with over the top Lady Gaga, hosting and getting to know the wonderful supermodel, actress and Texan, Jerry Hall, and simply taking a plunge in the pool with my three Vizlas — of them, Ava is undoubtedly the better swimmer! She is usually practicing her swim strokes about a half dozen times a day!"

Camille Styles, Lifestyle Blogger

"My favorite Austin moment was definitely getting to celebrate the launch of my first book at a big release party at Hotel Ella this fall, surrounded by my friends, family, and so many of the talented people who collaborated on the book throughout the yearlong process. As much as I enjoyed the national tour, there was something really special about celebrating in my own hometown!"

Cassie LaMere, Lexus of Austin

"If I had to choose, I would say my favorite moment of 2014 was right before my performance began at Dancing with the Stars Austin and lights came up. I could hear my amazingly supportive cheering section of friends, family and co-workers rooting for me from the audience and at that moment I knew I had achieved everything I was hoping to during this once-in-a-lifetime experience. I was so proud of our performance, the hard work and dedication it took to achieve and most importantly, helping raise a record-breaking $1.2 Million dollars for the Center for Child Protection."

Alyson Fox, Artist

"The moments that come back to me are the quieter times like when my husband and I walked around Laguna Gloria one weekday afternoon, or a wonderful dinner at my best friend's house last Spring, or seeing the Martha Graham Dance Company at the Bass Concert Hall...those still continually inspire."

Kristin Armstrong, Author

"Opening my acceptance letter into graduate school at age 43. Watching my son Luke play in his first high school football game. A recent moment with God where I understood that I was enough."

Your blog keeps Austin updated on the latest news in downtown. What is the most exciting development happening right now?
