Art Director

TRIBEZA, Austin’s leading arts and culture magazine, is looking for an Art Director to lead all aspects of design for TRIBEZA, including the magazine and digital media, and oversee the TRIBEZA brand. This role requires a great team player with excellent communication abilities to interact with staff and clients.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Execute TRIBEZA branding in monthly print issues and layouts under the direction of Editor and Director of Strategy
  • Create and oversee the overall look of the magazine, making it vibrant, fresh, and smart for a sophisticated reader
  • Lead in creating the editorial feature design
  • Oversee, approve and execute the design of the rest of the magazine and all the photos, illustrations, and graphics that appear in it
  • Works with Editor to provide creative direction for photoshoots
  • Manage the art and photo department budget
  • Ensure the magazine's overall brand, including its website and other digital products, has a consistent visual presentation
  • Layout, proof, and finalize print magazine design using assets conceptualized, developed and collected by editorial and creative teams
  • Develops a production schedule / storyboard for review by Editor, Director of Strategy, and Publisher
  • Coordinate with the sales and editorial departments to make sure deadlines are met.
  • Sets monthly production schedule and ensures all deadlines are met
  • Identify and assign photographers
  • Provide art direction at photo shoots
  • Sourcing and management of photo and illustration assets
  • Manages all issue proofs, edits, and press checks
  • Color-correct and retouch photos as needed
  • Oversees printing process: prepare all files for pre-press, upload and approve final pages for printer
  • Work with advertisers and sales team to design print, digital and promotional advertising
  • Work with printer for custom ad pricing and custom publishing

Requirements:

  • Proficiency in Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator and Lightroom
  • Video editing capabilities in Adobe Premiere Pro
  • Five years of design experience needed and publication work (print and online) desired.
  • Bachelors Degree in graphic design, art or similar field of study.
  • At least 2 years worth of editorial design experience.
  • Ability to manage contributors (photographers and illustrators) and motivate them to do their best work.
  • Ability to work well with editors in conceiving stories that work well visually.
  • Experience creating compelling, creative charts, graphs, and diagrams. Strong knowledge of and contacts among illustrators and photographers.
  • A strong creative vision and ability to produce high-energy, high-impact work on a budget.
  • Proven ability to juggle multiple priorities, plan ahead and hit deadlines.
