With summertime quickly approaching, looking and feeling your best is a priority, and you shouldn’t feel guilty about it.

“Self-care is not a luxury; it’s a necessity,” says Wedad Jaber, owner of the newly-opened Kalologie 360 Spa in Lamar Union.

Kalologie 360 Spa offers full-service massage therapy combined with restorative and rejuvenating skin care treatments. Jaber explains that skin treatments should be an essential part of your spring routine to prepare for being outdoors all summer.

After 15 years working in analytics, Wedad found a career path that could put her in a position to better help others. A licensed esthetician, Wedad opened Kalologie (which means "the study of beauty") to share the company's philosophy on health and wellness.

Following the success of Broadway’s All The Way — an intense, behind-the-scenes stage production based on Lyndon B. Johnson’s raucous first year as president — director Jay Roach and screenwriter Robert Schenkkan translated the play onto the small screen.

On May 11th, the LBJ Presidential Library hosted the Austin premiere of the HBO film, and TRIBEZA was on the red carpet to chat with lead actor Bryan Cranston and screenwriter Robert Schenkkan about bringing LBJ's story to life.

Gail Chovan

Fall/Winter 2016 Collection: Less is More

In March, Austin fashion designer, Gail Chovan, launched her Fall/Winter 2016 Less is More collection in Paris in tandem with Paris Fashion Week. During her installation of 12 artisanal couture creations at the Subsequi Showroom on Rue Chapon, Chovan was outed. It became very clear that this Jersey-born, Texas transplant is really French.

The Friday night reception for her installation was a like a lively reunion. And not the Romy and Michelle kind. Non! The room buzzed with artisan felt makers, pattern cutters, patrons of the art form, make up artists, models, fellow couturiers — all bons amis de Chovan. A diverse group that seemed joined at the dress form hip to delve deep to their pencil drawings and straight pin souls to birth great fashion on six-month gestational cycles. The Fall/Winter 2016 offerings, black and navy blue hues Gail described as “bruised,” hung and spun on the installation’s display elements she resourced and assembled. Bulb light fixtures from Ikea, disco ball turning mechanisms, electrical converters and, voila! Industrial chic with a lovely accent.

Chovan’s F/W 2016 collection primarily uses silk shantung, a fabric she chose for its foldable and structural qualities. The clothing has details that delight like the concert ticket you find years later combing through pants pockets before the Goodwill dropoff: tucks at right angles, Navajo yarn, ribbed knit. The designer’s muse is close to her heart. “ I constantly think about my daughter Zelda, who is blind, and I try to imagine how she would feel the weight, textures and fold of the design on her body,” said Chovan.

JUDE GALLIGAN

Hundreds of people are moving to Austin each day, and downtown is one of the major hubs of growth for the city. Local real estate expert Jude Galligan discusses smart urban growth and what to expect this year as the skyline continues to evolve.

Your blog keeps Austin updated on the latest news in downtown. What is the most exciting development happening right now?

From my point of view, the most exciting development is the Waller Creek District Master Plan. Decades in the making, this transformative project came to life after designers competed for the contract. It is finally coming to downtown, bringing an imaginative chain of parks, trails and connectivity to the eastern half of downtown.

What’s unique about living in downtown Austin compared to other cities?

Few cities have kept pace with Austin’s growth. It has an undeniable entrepreneurial spirit and creative energy that can be felt just by walking the streets of downtown. This has paved the way for smart urban growth projects - such as repurposing historic structures into functional spaces from residences and offices to grocery stores and event spaces. I think the Seaholm Power Plant development is doing a great job of mixing all of these.

Describe a perfect Saturday living in downtown Austin.

My perfect Saturday would be spent on foot, first waking up to a view of downtown then walking to Royal Blue Grocery to grab a breakfast taco and coffee. After people watching for a while, I’d walk the Lady Bird Lake Hike & Bike trail en route to the Farmers’ Market at Republic Square to pick up some fresh produce from the local vendors. In the afternoon, I’d catch a movie at The Alamo Drafthouse Ritz with a friend before eating at the Whole Foods Flagship on Lamar. I like ending my Saturdays with a nightcap in the Rainey Street district before heading back home.

SXSW is officially underway, and this year we find ourselves running around more than ever.

Whether you're visiting from out of town or you’re an Austin local looking for a place to escape the chaos, you'll need a break this week. Here's some of our best tips for recharging, refueling and getting through the 10-day fest.

For our March fashion spread, we were inspired by some of Austin’s biggest film and television credits. We reimagined the rugged western-wear featured in True Grit –– which was partly shot in downtown Austin –– and gave it an on-trend edge. To get a closer look at how Hollywood movie magic meets Austin fashion, shop the pieces below.

During a lunch break on our I Love You So Much shoot, our staff, photographer and models sat down to share several pounds of brisket, sausage and ribs from la Barbecue (right after shooting this mouthwatering closeup of the spread).

With so many incredible pitmasters and local breweries in town, we reached out to the folks at Austin Beerworks, Adelbert's Brewery, Live Oak Brewing Company and Zilker Brewing Company for some barbecue pairing suggestions.

As you flip through the pages of our February Love Issue, one thing you’ll notice is the beautiful blooms that pop up throughout the magazine. We got some major googly eyes for the bouquets featured in our "Real Weddings" features, and earmarked the TRIBEZA Wedding Guide for even more Pinterest-worthy petals.

Instead of letting all that inspiration go to waste, we tried our hand at flower arranging to see what we could create. Since we consider ourselves floral design novices, we asked a few top designers in town for their ideas, tips and guidance on DIY flower arrangements.

Beyond adding warmth and entertainment to a home, “coffee table books are a great layering tool,” says Michele Lorenz of Mark Ashby Design, the woman who chose each and every coffee table book in the Westlake home. “They add something personal to the space, as I gear my selections to my clients interest, passions and hobbies,” she explains.

We tapped Lorenz for some pro tips.

When over 300 authors and literary stars descend on the Texas State Capitol this weekend for the 20th Anniversary Texas Book Festival, it’s important to have a plan. From design books to Texas writing to Chuck Palahniuk at The Paramount (!) here’s who and what we’re making sure not to miss this weekend.

Between TRIBEZA Style Week, two music-filled ACL weekends and the upcoming Formula 1 U.S. Grand Prix happening October 23-25, our fall calendar is booked solid. So this weekend, we’re carving out some time for a much-needed reprieve. While the city boasts plenty of breezy patios to enjoy midday sips and snacks, why not take advantage of Austin’s greenspaces to set the scene for your own picnic?

This Sunday, we are hitting up one of the best markets in town, the Texas Farmers’ Market at Mueller, to make our very own DIY picnic. If you’re like us, we think that sometimes the best plans require no planning. Skip the grocery list; the local purveyors always offer high quality goods and the season’s best produce, making shopping a foolproof experience. And the best part? The market sits in the middle of an expansive family-friendly park replete with a glittering lake, scenic hike and bike trails, a children’s playground and lush lawns, which makes finding a sunny spot for your spread a breeze.

At an intimate rooftop cocktail party in downtown Austin on Thursday evening, Austin’s literati celebrated as the Texas Book Festival revealed the complete list of over 300 authors headed to the 2015 Texas Book Festival.

On October 17 and 18, the Texas State Capitol Grounds will welcome the largest number of authors in the Festival’s 20-year history. Literary director Steph Opitz promises that this year is gearing up to be the best yet. “Over the years we've had fabulous big name-authors and we've had ‘trust-us-this-person/book-is going-to-be-huge’ overnight sensations,” says Opitz. “This year it's going to be all that and some.”

The list revealed on Thursday includes plenty of celebrity names that even non-readers will be excited about, like actor (and author! — of the children's book Chocolate Me!) Taye Diggs. Of course, litearary stars will be in abundance too, with names like Margaret Atwood, Nick Flynn, Linda Gray, Daniel Handler (Lemony Snicket), Gary Hart, Luis Alberto Urerra, Margo Jefferson, Attica Locke, Marie Lu, Chuck Palahniuk, Tavi Gevinson, and Adrian Tomine headlining the fest.

And barbecue lovers, take note: Aaron Franklin will be speaking about his new “smoking manifesto” cookbook, Franklin Barbecue. We can only hope that the line for his panel isn't as long as the one at his namesake ‘cue joint.

When the days get long and lazy and sweaty here in Austin, it’s important to have two things: a completely engrossing read, and a cool spot to stretch out and read it.
