Going Live, with Lost Pines Resort & Spa

Austin is no stranger to great live music—duh. But try live music every night of the week, at the same venue, nestled in the vast, raw beauty that is Bastrop’s Loblolly Pine forest. That’s something we would love to hear more about.

The Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort & Spa has launched what might be the most exciting musical prospect of the Spring—an updated music series that boasts a new musician nightly, with calendars available here for the months of March and April.

Musicians vary from country to old school blues and swing to singer/songwriter serenades. Acts are set to perform in the hotel lobby on most weeknights, and the Shellers Barrelhouse Bar on Saturdays. Not planning on spending the night anytime soon? No problem: performances are totally free and open to the public. And their love for music doesn’t stop there. Lost Pines is also designed and decorated to reflect the resort’s love for Texas’ musical greats, from honorary cocktails to themed rooms. Sounds like the perfect mix of tunes and taste.

We talked to Amanda Fier from Hyatt Regency and asked her a few questions about the music, the calendar, and the aesthetic behind Lost Pines.

TRIBEZA: What makes this year’s music series different from past events?

Amanda Fier: Prior to January, Live at Lost Pines music was a featured amenity on Friday and Saturday nights, as well as special events and holidays. The expanded program includes live performances throughout the week, enhancing the check-in experience and offering a wonderful transition between afternoon and evening for leisure guests as well as business travelers who have spent their entire day in meetings. Additionally, this complimentary program is open to public, therefore giving locals a great reason to come out and enjoy our resort while letting outstanding music talents bend their ears for an hour or two.

T: Tell us a little bit about the different types of musicians coming to Lost Pines.

AF: The Live at Lost Pines featured music is diverse, much like the landscape and lifestyle of our region. Throughout the week from 5 to 7 p.m., we showcase solo acts – singer/songwriters and storytellers – and the occasional duo in the lobby, on the porch or by the fire pit. The performers’ genres include folk, alternative, country, jazz, blues; you name it. Then, on Fridays and Saturdays from 8 to 10 p.m., we have a mix of soloists, duet, trios and bands in Shellers Barrelhouse Bar. The sound varies from jazz, blues and R&B to Motown to rock and country.

T: How does the aesthetic of Lost Pines reflect your love of music as a company?

AF: The resort’s decorative style was no doubt inspired by the long history of music in the Lone Star State. Throughout our gathering spaces and corridors, Hyatt Lost Pines features artwork, photographs and written histories such that guests and visitors can learn about Texas icons and emerging artists alike during their stay. Among the spotlighted talents: Stevie Ray Vaughn, Willie Nelson, George Strait, and Muddy Waters – and that just scratches the surface.

Several guest suites are also named after Texas musical genres and moments. Each suite features photos and other memorabilia from those periods – eras whose rhythms, harmonies and melodies have created an ever-growing, ever-evolving soundtrack for the state, region and ultimately our resort destination. Also worth noting is the fact that we have a hillside amphitheatre beside the Lower Colorado River. It was part of the resort’s design from the get-go and is a beautiful space for outdoor performances. The pictures on the walls of Shellers reflect the rich musical history of Texas as well.

T: What are you most excited about as this series continues?

AF: We’re most excited for people to think of and experience us as a live music destination, whether they are coming out just to see their favorite performer in a new setting, to enjoy a meal, to take a vacation or to attend a wedding, conference or meeting. Music has long played and will continue to play a starring role in Central Texas, and we couldn’t be more excited to be turning up the volume on live music in our scenic neck of the woods.

JUDE GALLIGAN

Hundreds of people are moving to Austin each day, and downtown is one of the major hubs of growth for the city. Local real estate expert Jude Galligan discusses smart urban growth and what to expect this year as the skyline continues to evolve.

Your blog keeps Austin updated on the latest news in downtown. What is the most exciting development happening right now?
